onezom is James McEwan
I’m a web developer, designer and illustrator based in Edinburgh, a lovely artistic city which is on the East coast of Scotland.

I started this blog in 2004 after feeling the need to have a consistent home on the web. The title I think was no doubt influenced by Shaun of the Dead which had just been released that year, I do love a good zombie film and a plethora of bad ones too!.
For the last 4 years, I’ve worked as an internal web developer and designer for Brewin Dolphin Limited. During my time there I’ve worked on both the external sites and built many a web app for internal use. It’s a fun gig and I’m lucky to get to do this stuff for a living.
I’m a passionate advocate of web standards since being introduced to them through Jeffery Zeldman’s seminal book Designing with Web Standards and try to help those who are unfamiliar with standards understand why they are so important.
Outside of tech I love comics, from the usual superhero fare, to sci-fi, fantasy, horror, comedy and indie slice of life, it all interests me. I think comics are an underestimated medium the amount of talent found within their pages is astonishing. Some of my favourite books at the moment are Tank Girl, Hellboy, Suburban Glamour, Invincible, Jim Mahfood’s Stupid Comics and Paul Cornell’s brilliant new marvel comic Captain Britain and MI:13.

Software wise, I use Textmate for coding, or Visual Studio if I’m using .Net. Graphics are built in Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Illustrator CS3, if I’m doing something simple like cropping photos, I use the marvellously lightweight Pixelmator.
