Kara Zor El in Smallville

July 21 2007

Smallville and Comic book Supergirl
First pic of Laura Vandervoort as Superman’s cousin is up and well I can kinda see where they’re going, making it similar to the current Supergirl costume. It’s a bit all over the place too, the colours are pure gap, but the wrist cuff is supposed to say “I’m bad” or something. The last time I checked DC Comics were busy doubling back on the bad-girl aspects of the current Supergirl incarnation.

Oh well, I’ll just have to wait and see how she’s portrayed, I really hope they don’t bother with the usual smallville every character was bad before Clark met them schtick (see Aquaman, Flash, Green Arrow, Perry White, Lucy Lane) and place Supergirl in more of a complimentary role to Clark than an antagonistic one or at least resolve those elements quickly.

Doctor Doctor…

January 7 2007

So the big British tv success story of the last couple of years has been the comeback of Doctor Who, first with a darker tinge and then lightening up as it took it’s place back as the number 1 kids show.

While the second season didn’t appeal to me, I get that the first season was trying a more mature approach to keep nostalgic adults hooked in case their kids didn’t take to the show. However the young’uns loved it so by season 2 it became a far more youthful show complete with a younger more energetic doctor. Still it’s great to see something like this capturing the imaginations of the UK today, especially in our cop show saturated culture.

Plus the Doctor’s new outfit, blue suit, red tie, red converse, cements the idea that this is the British Superman. Alien refugee of a long dead planet based around science, but with a maniac charm, intellect and biting wit to match the brute force of the man of steel that really makes the Doctor as much a symbol of the UK as Superman is of the USA.

Though I have my issues with the second season, I think what’s not lost from the first is the character development that makes this series so special. The notion that like the last son of krypton, immortality comes with the price of loneliness for the Doctor is one hell of a hook for the show. If they keep up the quality of writing, I’ll be hooked for the duration.

Let us all forget about Torchwood….or at least hope next season will have more episodes written by Paul Tomalin, Dan McCulloch and Noel Clarke.

Super Shut in fun weekend!

June 12 2005

This weekend so far, has been basically been a fine practise in the art of doing f.a. So in that tradition of time wasting, I present a list of things that sponge up hours of excess weekend:
TV

  • Doctor Who – The BBC’s finest, last night’s episode was brilliant. The season has really covered the extremes of the current social woes, news programs controlling people’s minds, the war on terror and now reality tv. Next week we get to see who Bad Wolf is, I’m hoping it’s The Master!
  • Big Brother – I know it’s evil, but damn, it’s addictive. Right now I reckon Sam, Science and Max are my favourite contestants in that order, I’m not going to go into the gossip of the house since mentioning it is bad enough.

Comics

  • New Warriors (Marvel) – Being an old school warriors fan I was a bit iffy on the reality tv concept, but the story was actually pretty good. The heroes seemed to bumble a bit which is good for comic relief but will no doubt piss off a few long term fans. But all round it’s a good concept, hopefully we’ll see a few more issues of Zeb Wells and Skottie Young’s Warriors pop up after these 6.

Well, I did say I did f.a this weekend.

I’m gonna need a drink

March 12 2005

Just about on the verge of going loopy, which is what I get for staying in the house all day.

Caught comic relief on the beeb yesterday it was pretty well done and quite funny, especially the Spider-Plant-Man skit with Rowan Atkinson and the return of the other famous ginger, Chris Evans. It’s always good to see them top the total from last year too.

In the theme of being able to stay alive past 30, I’ve been attempting to eat healthier and will be contacting a personal trainer this week to finally kill this gut of mine.
As for work and such, I’m finally committing my ideas to scripts, which are turning out nicely, the things I forget from time to time in scripting comics is that it’s far too easy to run dialogue for a good while before you realise this could have been 5 panels and that I should really make 6 panels my hard limit per page. Drawing wise, I’ve got a couple of new ones after the cut.
