Now what kind of raving DC Comics fan would I be if I didn’t comment on this?
Having watched the trailer, I have to say I’m throughly psyched for this one. I know I shouldn’t be as normally that leads to disappointment, but it’s Superman dammit!
Spacey is on top from in this trailer and looks like he’s having a ball of a time channeling the manic Lex Luthor, who appears to be more psychotic than the Hackman version (who’s portrayal of Luthor was closer DC’s Stan Lee analogue Funky Flashman), in fact he reminds me a lot of Jack Nicholson’s Joker in the first Batman film.
So far I’m impressed by Routh in the titular role, he not only looks the part, but I like the little nuances, like Clark having a softer voice compared to superman’s. This coupled with what appear to be pretty high prescription glasses that distort his eyes a fair bit in the last scene of the trailer, adds a bit of credibility to the worst disguise ever.
Kate Bosworth wasn’t in the trailer enough for me form an opinion on her role. Plus her longest scene there was against a show stopping Spacey delivering a couple of what will most likely be the most quoted lines of the film with a deliciously camp inflection (it’s not always a bad thing).
Stylistically, the film looks incredible. The colours look like Alex Ross’ art, which I think was the effect that Singer was going for and he’s really succeeded. The new Genesis cameras by Panasonic used here have finally achieved a digital film that looks strikingly like 35 mm film.
The special effects look flawless. Particularly the flight scenes which just look so authentic, that it makes me glad this film was in production hell until now, when technology can truly advance on the groundbreaking effects work of the 1978 original.
Now the hard part, waiting until July 14th and not looking at spoilers in between!
