On the buying list

April 30 2005

Looking around for junk to buy this month so far the list is

  • Mac OSX Tiger - Been on my list for ages, decided to take the plunge today after reading all the good press on the OS and in particular Spotlight, word running round the tech circles, is that once Longhorn features a similar option, folders could be a thing of the past.
  • Superfriends vol 2 - I never got to see these as a kid, so it’s been kinda fun getting into the series. I have much love for the overall Silver Age style madcap adventures the JLA are sent on. Plus vol 1 had a great documentary that interviewed some great comics writers like Mark Waid and Geoff Johns.
  • Batman Vol 3 - Anyone who has read Batman knows this is the best media representation of him, bar none. Just an awesome, dark and haunting version of batman that set a bar for other comic book animated series that few have lived up to.

There’s some other stuff I’m looking at too, but I’m watching the funds these days so I can’t go crazy with the spendy like I used to.
This has been another useless post brought to you by James McEwan and his credit card.

Picks of the week (Jan 23 05)

January 23 2005

Wee update of stuff I’ve picked up this week:

  • Citizen Kane Special Edition dvd - Somehow I’ve never gotten round to seeing this until I bought the dvd. Simple put, it was amazing, lives up to it’s reputation. Welles was brilliant, really don’t need to go into this any further cause you all know how genius this film is anyway.
  • Lodown 44 - New issue of the always brilliant dutch culture mag. There’s an awesome interview with James Lavelle and Ian Brown, pictures of the car that Haze designed the exteriors of and some photo journalism of the Mars Volta on tour. Great stuff.
  • Writing Urban Calligraphy and Beyond - Great book on the study of graphitti fantastic stuff.

Kane is available at amazon.

Lodown and Writing - Urban Calligraphy and Beyond are available at the always awesome Analogue books

Breaking from the Grind

September 22 2004

Books from FP online still haven’t arrived, I’m putting it down to the bank holiday on monday putting things on the fritz. Just read that the New Warriors are on their way back at marvel. With Scottie Young drawing and a reality tv premise. Oh well. Maybe I’ll buy it for the sake of Nova and the gang being there. Still with marvel, I’m kinda let down that the only pictures of the fantastic four costumes are lo-res scans that are circulating the net. The suits aren’t bad, the “4″ needs to be in the centre and maybe Chris Evans could have bought a bottle of bleach. Back to the fun and games.

All and all it was a pleasent weekend

September 21 2004

Well, I’m slightly pissed that I missed out on Star Wars yesterday. Due to it being an edinburgh holiday no mail was delivered, thus the people who pre ordered the box set at HMV/Virgin got their copies before my amazon pre ordering ass. Plus I’m waiting for those comics.

Saw Collateral at the UGC was really surprised at how good Tom Cruise was in that.
I also enjoyed the way they strayed from being a typical Cruise movie, in that it was shot on video, which gave it that grainy and documentary feel, the short joke, and finally (highlight text for spoiler)having Cruise’s face shot and bloody near the end.

Also watched Labyrinth again, I love Brian Froud’s goblins and monster designs. The “making of” on the dvd was brilliant. the creative process of how they built the puppets is facinating, the complexity of building these creatures and the level of creativity is wonderful. It really makes me wish CGI wasn’t as common place as it is now.
