Self improvement 101

January 10 2008

Part of my new years resolution is to work harder on the various things I’ve let slip to the wayside.

One of those things is my art and my appreciation of the various mediums that interest me. I think I need to see art as being a pass time rather than a possible career choice. When I was dead set on art as a career I pressured myself into very hackish tendencies rather than for the enjoyment of being creative. I think this year will be a good period for me to really explore what’s out there and expand my skill as an artist.

On recommendation I’ve also bought John Berger’s “Ways of Seeing“, a book on art appreciation. I used to love deconstructing fine art and photography in high school and this is something I’d very much like to pick up again.

Career wise, I can finally say that I’m satisfied in my choice to be a web developer and savour the challenges presented to me each day in my career. At 23 years old I am extremely appreciative of where I am now and the opportunities I have been given over he past four years.
I’m looking forward to working with new technologies and exploring what’s out there in the open source world to see how we can apply those systems to our mostly proprietary setup.

The other thing I’d really like to do more of is freelance work. The recent design job I did for Leah was very enjoyable and reawakened my interest in the wordpress platform, which I think is my preferred cms for any personal sites I do in the future.

I also really need to focus on my health, over the past 18 months I’ve let my weight slip back up, for my own sake I need to get into regular exercise again and lay off the junk food completely.

In all I think I have a fairly positive outlook for 2008 and look forward to seeing what’s next in my life.

Spidey

Spidey

I think I’m in the minority of fans looking forward to the “Brand New Day” Spider-man story arc. Basically through a not-so-good plot device (deal with the devil-literally) Spider-man is 20 something and single again, his marriage to Mary Jane of the last 20 years retconed to just “living together” and Harry Osborn is alive again.

Anyway, the piece was just a few quite pen sketches around Spider-man and Peter Parker, I love the way the blue from my pencil mixed with the tria marker, kinda gives it a more skin-tone like appearance.

The New Setup

January 5 2008

My New Home Entertainment Centre

So the day after I got my xbox my tv died, which is pretty much my luck to a ‘t’.
Luckily my folks decided to go halfers on a new Goodmans 32inch HD, which is a pretty sweet replacement for my old 28″ bulky telly.

Of course from there my downfall began. You see once you get an HD tv, then you want to get the HD-DVD add on to the xbox, then there’s the HD-DVDs of films you already have but must experience in HD (like Transformers), that’s followed by needing to buy Halo and Mass Effect for the 360 and a Gold account to play said games online.

It’s a sickness, it really is….now I need to get that HDMI cable…

LeahCulver.com redesign

LeahCulver.com redesign

The redesign I worked on for Leah Culver’s site is now live

I’m really happy with how this one turned out, especially the permalink pages. Working on the design was a bit of a learning experience for me, since the work I’ve done in the past has been more graphically focused sites comics or illustration work. This site, however, is more textually focused and I had to really reign in on the graphical flourishes I had added to early mock ups of the site that distracted from the content.

Anyway, thanks to Leah for the opportunity, it was a fun little project!
