Where’d the awesome cartoons go?

June 11 2007

A while back I was talking with an animator friend of mine about the lack of cartoons with realistic looking characters on tv today. He said in dismay, it’s due to a lack of folks in the industry who have draftsman skills (something Richard Williams echoes in the Animator’s Survival Kit).

It’s kinda disappointing. I’d love to see new cartoons that have that old school adventure style, not mention kick ass themes like Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, Pole Position and various others… here’s hoping the 80s redux wave will extend to a re-emergence of old school draughtsmanship and awesome cartoons.

Wow. Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors… I actually started to think I’d imagined that series until a few years back. Couldn’t find anything on the ‘net about it. Awesome, awesome series. Glad someone else remembers it!
