The Conference/Professional Development Cycle

January 31 2007

So it’s conference booking time for me at work, so far I’m liking the look of the local Highland Fling day on Progressive Enhancement, lots of great speakers there, also of course @Media 2007 looks really interesting, couldn’t quite come up with a good reason to go to the San Fransisco one rather than London other than “San Fransisco would be awesome” but London looks ace too, in particular I’m looking forward to the Microformats session as I think we could benefit from using these practices at work and the Javascript session because I love javascript basically.

We’ve also got an in house workshop with Andy Clarke lined up to help the troops work with structural markup, css and design theory, should be awesome.

Playing around with the new K2 on my dummy blog, love the widgets features, might spend some time this weekend migrating this site over to the new version.

Get a Mac UK

January 29 2007

get a mac
This is awesome, a series of British Get a Mac adverts with the brilliant Mitchell and Webb of Peepshow fame. Maybe it’s a local thing but I’m finding these far more humourous than the originals.

Doctor Doctor…

January 7 2007

So the big British tv success story of the last couple of years has been the comeback of Doctor Who, first with a darker tinge and then lightening up as it took it’s place back as the number 1 kids show.

While the second season didn’t appeal to me, I get that the first season was trying a more mature approach to keep nostalgic adults hooked in case their kids didn’t take to the show. However the young’uns loved it so by season 2 it became a far more youthful show complete with a younger more energetic doctor. Still it’s great to see something like this capturing the imaginations of the UK today, especially in our cop show saturated culture.

Plus the Doctor’s new outfit, blue suit, red tie, red converse, cements the idea that this is the British Superman. Alien refugee of a long dead planet based around science, but with a maniac charm, intellect and biting wit to match the brute force of the man of steel that really makes the Doctor as much a symbol of the UK as Superman is of the USA.

Though I have my issues with the second season, I think what’s not lost from the first is the character development that makes this series so special. The notion that like the last son of krypton, immortality comes with the price of loneliness for the Doctor is one hell of a hook for the show. If they keep up the quality of writing, I’ll be hooked for the duration.

Let us all forget about Torchwood….or at least hope next season will have more episodes written by Paul Tomalin, Dan McCulloch and Noel Clarke.

Cheap and Nasty

January 5 2007

Quick redesign, well less redesign and more, colour change and a new header graphic. It’s kinda based on a design I worked on for some friends of mine, which I never finished, one in a long list unfortunately!

Being Friday it’s also new comics day, and a bitching one at that (yes I said bitching…) Marvel Civil War was awesome, the fanboy in me loves the final battle, the artist loves what Steve McNiven is doing. Actually it’s a fantastic week for comic art, Frank Quitely, Tim Sale both have fantastic looking comics out this week.

Do I really need categories for this site, maybe a tagging system would make more sense?
