Sin City

June 27 2005

Okay, this is going to be controversial, while I found Sin City to be visually stunning, story wise, it didn’t do much for me.

I’ve never been a fan of the voice over narrative in film, while it works in the comic format, I don’t think the dialogue comes off as well when spoken. Apparently it’s a no-no of cinema too according to a film student friend of mine.

Out of the three stories I found “That Yellow Bastard” to be the strongest and I find the same true of the comic books.

The visuals however, really push the boundaries of the technology and create an amazing visual palette of black, white with a gust of colour. While this toned down the violence in the same sense that the green and yellow blood did in Evil Dead 2, it also enhanced the impact of some scenes, say when Junior is shot and his final comeuppance.

Bottom line, while this is an amazing film to look at and I urge everyone to see it just for the visual style, the tales featured really weren’t my cup of tea.
